世界第一部petaflop級超級電腦IBM Roadrunner除役 - iThome Online

美國能源部Los Alamos實驗室宣布，曾是2008年全球超級電腦冠軍的IBM Roadrunner已於本周日（3/31）正式除役。

Roadrunner在2008年6月以1.026 petaflop/s登上全球超級電腦冠軍寶座，當時其執行效能足足是第二名IBM Blue Gene/L（0.478 petaflop/s）的兩倍以上。Roadrunner不只在同年11月蟬聯第一名，它也是全世界第一部效能突破每秒1 petaflop等級的超級電腦。

Roadrunner曾被應用在多種科學運算中，後被安置在美國核能安全管理部（National Nuclear Security Administration，NNSA）的先進模擬與運算專案中，用來進行儲備管理計畫（Stockpile Stewardship Program）的模擬運算，以確保美國核武儲備能力的安全與可靠性。

該計畫負責人Chris Deeney表示，Roadrunner讓他們實施現代化儲存時不必求助於地下化的測試便能在超級電腦上評估技術的改變。

Roadrunner採用混合核心架構，有6563顆雙核的AMD Opteron處理器，以及12240顆IBM PowerXCell 8i處理器，雖然當時市場上有其他的混合電腦，但沒有任一台屬於超級電腦規格，IBM與Roadrunner則創下了新典範。

Los Alamos實驗室估計，到2020年或2030年，超級電腦的執行效能將會是Roadrunner的1000倍，以符合美國武器實驗室或其他先進科學的需求。

全球超級電腦的進步神速，離Roadrunner成為冠軍才短短的5年，去年11月公布的全球超級電腦龍頭Cray Titan已可達到17.59 petaflop/s的運算速度，為Roadrunner的17倍。

Roadrunner雖已於本周日正式關機，但還沒完全退休，在Roadrunner被拆解前，將有一個月的時間讓研究人員在該系統上進行有關ASC相關應用的實驗，以作為未來設計叢集電腦的參考。（編譯/陳曉莉）
